Storing a boat in the off-season ensures protection from winter weather and keeps your investment safe from damage and theft. Before putting a boat into storage, there are some ways to help the watercraft withstand a lengthy period of nonuse. Below, five of these aspects are discussed in more detail.

How to Prepare a Boat for Storage

1. Change the Oil

It's not uncommon for a certain amount of water to get into a boat's oil tank. When the boat is unused for an extended length of time, however, the water can cause engine corrosion. Before putting the vessel into storage, change the oil filter, flush out the engine, and add fresh oil.

2. Flush the Coolant

Drain all coolant from the boat and flush out the system with cold water. Then, refill it with antifreeze that has been diluted according to the manufacturer's guidelines. This is a crucial step that prevents the engine from freezing in colder weather and also helps safeguard against corrosion.

3. Wash, Dry, & Cover the Boat

4. Fill the Gas Tank

Colder temperatures can produce condensation inside the gas tank, which is another corrosion risk. If the condensation freezes, it can do significant damage to a boat. Be sure to fill the fuel tank before storage, then add a gas stabilizer that will keep the fuel fresh and prohibit freezing.

5. Disconnect the Battery

Don't drain your boat's battery during its time in storage. Disconnect the wires and remove the battery. If you have a charger at home, charge the battery periodically throughout the winter to keep it in good shape for spring. An auto shop can also charge a battery for you.
