Part of being a diligent caretaker of your home is understanding the threats your roofing system faces. The more you know, the better you’ll be able to protect the structure and work with your roofer. Here’s a quick guide to what commonly causes roof damage.

What Can Cause Roof Damage?

1. Strong Winds

Severe wind gusts often cause damage. In cases where the shingles are already weak or have been improperly installed, they can rip right off the roof. In other cases, a powerful gust can blow debris against the roof’s surface, causing cracks and other issues. To avoid wind-related problems, have your roofer inspect your shingles, repair any warped stretches, and remove debris that can hit your roof and lead to damage.

2. Incoming Water

rooferIf water pools on your roof, it can cause leaks, damage walls and floors in your home, and create rot in the roofing structure itself, leading to an untimely replacement. Each month, look for missing shingles, as this issue can cause leaks. If you notice a gap, call a roofer before the damage gets worse. Additionally, clear out your gutters on a regular basis. If they get clogged, water won’t be able to leave your roof, increasing the chance of a leak and water-related damage.

3. Tree Branches

Watch for lengthy tree branches that are nearby. During major storms, the wind can whip them against your roof and scrape off the shingles. If a branch breaks off and falls on the structure, it can even cause a puncture. To prevent these problems, talk to a tree expert about trimming or pruning any rogue branches. Don’t cut the branches yourself, as this can be dangerous without the proper equipment.
