If you’re interested in drilling for new water well, knowing what to expect will make it easier to plan for the drilling process. Water well drilling is a fast and streamlined process that will result in clean, fresh water for your home. Here's what to expect from your local well drilling service.

How New Water Well Drilling Works

New Water WellThere are two types of drilling rigs used for this purpose. Rotary rigs use a drill bit shaped like a screw. As it turns, it carries dirt up the length of the bit and to the surface. Cable drilling rigs repeatedly drop a weight into the ground, creating holes in the dirt. In both cases, excavated earth will be placed into a separate pit. Some drills also use water to help make the excavate the dirt more smoothly. When the new water well is fully excavated, it'll be anywhere from 30 to 500 feet deep.

Hardware Needed For the Well

Once the hole is dug, your well drilling service will add a well casing. This steel or plastic pipe lines the perimeter of the well and prevents dirt and other contaminants from falling into the well. The casing also prevents the well water from freezing in the winter. They'll install filters at the bottom to keep sand, mud, and silt from drawing into the water. Finally, they'll place a well pump, which is either a submersible pump at the bottom or a jet pump which sits at the top.
