Attending a loved one’s funeral is often an extremely stressful time. Not knowing what to wear can add to the stress. It’s possible to choose appropriate attire that’s both comfortable and respectful by following a few guidelines. Below are some tips to help you decide what to wear to funeral services.

How to Choose an Outfit for a Loved One’s Funeral

1. Wear Black Unless Otherwise Specified

The standard color to wear at funeral services is black. If you don’t have an appropriate all-black outfit, choose neutral, dark tones. Avoid white (unless it’s an undershirt of a suit) and bright colors. Some families may ask that your attire follow a different set of guidelines, especially if the loved one was of a faith that specifies funeral garments. If the loved one was part of a uniformed profession, they may ask that those who also shared this profession wear their uniforms. You can check with the funeral home to see if the family has specified a dress code.

2. Be Modestfuneral

Funerals are generally reserved events. Excess makeup or jewelry may be seen as disrespectful. Avoid bright eyeshadow, lipstick, or blush, and avoid large and bold jewelry. Your safest bet is to overdress, instead of underdress.

3. Be Formal

If you’re unsure of what dress code is expected, err on the side of caution and choose a formal outfit. Blue jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, muscle shirts, shorts, and torn or printed clothing should be avoided unless the dress code states differently. For men, suits, dress pants, and button-up shirts are generally acceptable. For women, modest dresses, skirts with blouses, or work pants with blouses are also acceptable. Dress shoes should be worn with low to moderate heels.
