From spring through fall, many motorists invest in hail repair to remove cracks, dents, and additional damage to their vehicles. Although hailstorms can occur anywhere, they are most frequent in landlocked states, including an area known as Hail Alley. To determine whether your car is at risk, below are a few facts to know about Hail Alley.

Where & What Is Hail Alley?

Brighton-Colorado-hail-repairA hailstone forms when a water droplet, carried by thunderstorm updrafts, exceeds the freezing level. It grows in size as more water droplets attach to it. The lump of ice becomes heavier as it grows, getting to the point where updrafts can no longer carry it. When this happens, the hailstone plummets to the ground. Hailstorms happen most frequently in areas where the freezing altitude of air is below 11,000 feet. This is often the case in southeast Wyoming, northeast Colorado, southwest Nebraska, and northwest Kansas. These areas make up Hail Alley.

Why Car Owners Should Be Concerned

Although hail damage can be a concern anywhere, it is particularly pressing if you live in Hail Alley. To prevent the need for extensive hail repair, pay attention to local weather reports. If a hailstorm is in the forecast, remember to park your car in the garage or under a carport. If you must park outside, put a cover on the car. The material will absorb the impact from falling hailstones. If you’re on the road when the weather turns, pull over and find covering until the sky clears.

If large chunks of ice fall on your car, putting off hail repair will make the damage worse.
