Your Guide to a Lisfranc Injury
A Lisfranc injury is considered low-energy because it doesn’t take much more than a twist or fall to damage the bones and ligaments. Soccer and football players tend to be especially susceptible to this sports injury since it typically occurs when an athlete stumbles over a flexed foot.
The symptoms of a Lisfranc injury may resemble minor strains and sprains. You’ll likely notice swelling on the top of the foot along with pain that becomes worse when you stand or walk. One of the most characteristic symptoms is bruising on both the top and bottom of the foot.
Treatment & Recovery
Your doctor should first take X-rays of your foot to determine the extent of the damage. If the joint is not dislocated or fractured, and the ligaments are still intact, you probably don’t need surgery. Instead, you’ll wear a cast or boot for approximately six weeks, during which time you should not put any weight on the foot.
If the joint is fractured or abnormally positioned, your doctor may recommend one of two types of surgery. Internal fixation involves holding the bones in places with screws or plates, while fusion is the process of welding the bones together. In the six to eight weeks following surgery, you’ll wear a cast or boot and need to keep weight off of it.
