For most people, the thought of packing up and preparing to move to a new apartment is overwhelming. There’s so much to do, and most of it within a very short time frame. However, relocating isn’t exhausting if you have a plan in place. Below is a guide for creating a checklist two months before the big day.

Your Apartment Moving Checklist

Two Months Before

Two months before your move, it’s time to research a few moving companies and choose one. Confirm their availability on your desired date and inquire about insurance. Ask about what additional services are available such as packing materials and storage units. If you don’t plan to use a moving company, you may still need a truck. Find out rates and reserve a truck that can accommodate all your possessions.

apartmentsGive yourself at least a day before returning to work. If your apartment is in another city because of a new job, schedule the move so that you have at least a week to get acclimated to the area.

One Month Before

Arrange to have your lights, water, cable, and other utilities shut off on your preferred date. If applicable, services can be transferred to your new apartment. Let the companies know the turn-on date.

Stop by the post office to fill out a change-of-address form. It typically takes several weeks for mail to start arriving at your new apartment. Let your bank, car insurance provider, credit card company, and other important contacts know your new address too.

Start collecting boxes, bubble wrap and other packing materials based on the size and amount of your possessions. This is the time to also begin organizing items into three categories: keep, discard or donate. The goal is to minimize and consolidate to make the move more efficient.

One to Two Weeks Before

Start packing items that you don’t use on a daily basis, such as books, dishes and seasonal clothing. Arrange a separate box for important documents. As a precaution, consider creating PDF files as a backup for important files. A week before the move, all items should be packed and ready to go.

Moving Day

Pick up the rental truck or contact the moving company to confirm the arrival time. If you’re leaving an apartment, be sure to clean it thoroughly once everything is moved out to ensure you get your deposit back. If applicable, return the key and let the landlord know you’re forwarding address for the deposit. Double-check that no items are left behind.
