Sand in their water well is a common issue for residents of New Mexico. The particles can trickle in through the base of the pump or come in through the casing of the well once the material begins to deteriorate. While it takes a bit of effort restore the purity of your drinking water, it’s not impossible. Follow these simple steps to ensure that your well remains sand-free.

How to Deal With Sand in a Water Well

1. Schedule an Inspection

Discovering the source of the issue will help determine your next steps. If it’s mechanical, then a replacement part should seal up the opening and prevent any other particles from getting into the system. If the pump is the wrong size for the well, you might have to order a replacement that’s slightly smaller in size. Scheduling an inspection with a drilling contractor is the best way to figure out how to handle the issue.

2. Secure New Materials

If the seal fails, then loose sediment will begin to accumulate along the base and clog up the mechanisms. Installing a brand new casing around the interior of the well should be enough to restore the barrier and ensure that the water remains clean.

3. Install a Sand Separator

If the casing is completely intact and the pump is the right size for the well, then a centrifugal sand separator might be what you need. Contractors install this contraption on top of the ground in front of the pressure tank. The force that it applies to the water as it circulates through completely removes any sand particles and drops them toward the bottom of the container. This then drains the sand through a small valve opening so that the system stays clear.
