We’ve all felt the familiar sensation of a burning mouth after eating a spicy dish, and a chemical called capsaicin is to blame. This fiery compound sends signals to the brain that indicate an intense warmth, which creates the familiar burning feeling in our mouths. Fortunately, there are a few ways that can make enjoying spicy food a little easier.

How to Enjoy Spicy Foods

1. Eat Foods With a Rough Texture

When the fiery sensation begins, munch on crackers or rice to get a break from the spice. Your mouth receptors will temporarily focus on the new, different texture instead of zeroing in on the uncomfortable signals from the capsaicin. These new messages to the brain will briefly interrupt the heat signals, giving you respite from the spice.

2. Drink a Glass of Milk

Opt for a glass of milk because it contains casein, which is a protein that breaks down capsaicin. All dairy contains casein; so if milk isn’t available, have some yogurt or ice cream to soothe the sensation.

3. Ease Into the Heat

Your pain receptors need to build a tolerance to capsaicin, and they’ll physically change over time after repeated exposure. Don’t eat a spicy dish just because everyone else at the table is. Start with milder foods, and build your way up the Scoville scale. To begin, order spice on the side and have plenty of coolants on hand to alleviate the side effects.
