In the last decade, e-cigarettes became a popular way for traditional tobacco smokers to stop smoking. But as vaping spread, many middle and high school kids also started using the devices. While they appear to be less harmful than traditional cigarettes, pediatric dentists are seeing an increase in oral health-related side effects.

Why Is Vaping So Prevalent Among Hawaii’s Youth?

Although it is illegal in Hawaii to sell vape pens and e-liquid to anyone under the age of 21, this has not stopped children and teenagers from accessing these alternate tobacco products. Recent studies have reported vape use is higher among Hawaii minors than on the mainland. Children as young as seven and eight have been found with the devices, and 42% of high school students have tried vaping at least once.

Hawaii officials believe the rise in vaping has to do with how available the devices and juice are online. Some kids may be getting vape equipment from adults as well.

How Do E-Cigarettes Harm Oral Health?

pediatric dentist While vaping is believed to be a healthier alternative, it’s actually connected to a rise in traditional tobacco smoking among young people. Pediatric dentists also point out that vaping has consequences for the teeth and gums. The majority of school-aged children who vape cite the tasty flavors as the prime reason. While the juices in these devices might taste good, many of the ingredients used to make them are harmful to the teeth and gums. This has led to a steady rise in tooth decay among this age group.

The three main ingredients—propylene glycol, glycerin, and nicotine—found in most e-juices have known oral health side effects. They make the gums and enamel more habitable for harmful bacteria to thrive. They also alter inflammation responses, making it harder for the teeth to defend themselves against these threats and for the gums to heal when infected. Combined with the fact that vaping causes dry mouth, the user becomes much more susceptible to tooth decay.
