Our ancient ancestors loved beer. Despite what most people might say about the occasional drink, liquor may have been a massive contributor to the development and advancement of human societies. Beer and it’s relationship to the ancient world have been documented even before the Egyptian pyramids were built.

A Brief History Of Ancient Alcohol

What ancient civilization first discover beer?

The first recorded recipe for beer dates back to the ancient world. Egyptians first documented the practice of brewing on papyrus scrolls dated to around 5,000 B.C. These beers were most likely brewed using dates, pomegranates, and other indigenous herbs and would have been quite harsh by today’s standards. The Ancient Egyptians would enjoy a glass or two during religious ceremonies. The Pharaoh would be responsible for directing the brewing schedule as well as the distribution of the product to their people. Pharaohs loved their liquor so much that they chose to be buried with vats of it. It has also been speculated that the workers who built the pyramids were probably paid in alcohol

Why do Europeans love beer?

liquorBeer is no stranger in Europe, with Europeans crafting this alcoholic concoction before the start of the Middle Ages. Roman and Greek countries relied on the ancient Egyptian teachings of fermenting wheat and yeast. Although the elite class preferred wine over beer, it became so popular with the rural class that it went on to become one of the most common drinks by the end of the Middle Ages. By then, beer was enjoyed by every social class.

How did beer make its way to America?

While Europeans industrialized the production of this liquor, America’s first-recorded beer was dated in 1587 by Virginia colonists. Beer caught on quickly with the colonist population, and the Dutch West India Company opened their first American brewery at Manhattan in 1632. Beer was such a demanded drink, even before the start of the American Revolution, that the founding fathers were debating whether to call themselves “The Boston Tea Party” or the “Boston Beer Party.” Since then, the demand for beer has only increased, with NBWA reporting 202.2 million beer barrels sold in the United States in 2018.
