A knocked-out tooth is one of the most serious dental emergencies that can happen to your children. Fortunately, if you act quickly and get help from your family dentist, the damage can be fixed, and they may even be able to save the tooth. Every minute counts, so know how to react to this emergency.

Emergency Guide to Dealing With a Knocked-Out Tooth

1. Rinse the Tooth

Look for the tooth immediately. When you find it, pick it up by the crown, which is the chewing surface of the tooth. Do not touch the root, which is the part that’s not visible when looking at the tooth in the mouth. If it got dirty, rinse it off gently with cool water. Do not use soap, scrub it, or wrap it in anything.

2. Keep the Tooth Moist

dentistYou can keep the tooth alive by keeping it moist. If possible, place it gently back into the socket. If you cannot push it into the socket, position it above the socket and have your child close their mouth around it. If necessary, place it in milk or put it in their mouth inside their cheek. Do not place the tooth in tap water; this will kill the surface cells on the tooth.

3. Call Your Family Dentist

You’ll need to see your family dentist as soon as possible. It’s best to see them within 30 minutes, but they may be able to save the tooth up to an hour after the incident. Keep in mind that if the tooth has broken into pieces, your dentist will not be able to save it.
