Many people recognize asphalt by sight, but many may not know what it’s made of or what its benefits are. If you’re considering a paving project, the following is a guide to some of the most commonly asked questions about this useful material.

What to Know About Asphalt Paving

What is asphalt?

Asphalt is a mixture of crushed rock, sand, or gravel combined with a binding agent — a semi-solid petroleum product called bitumen — and occasionally other fillers. It is heated at a factory and quickly transported to the site for paving.

What is an asphalt overlay?

PavementAn overlay involves pouring asphalt on top of an existing surface like a driveway or parking lot. Overlaying asphalt on top of concrete is possible but can have problems, as the asphalt can develop cracks from the underlying concrete base. An asphalt base can work if it’s not too damaged, but the paving contractor should inspect it before they begin.

What’s the difference between asphalt and concrete?

Asphalt is prized for its flexibility, which helps it adjust better under extreme weight and handles weather conditions as well. Concrete relies on its raw strength to persevere, so it may deteriorate more over time. Concrete is also a more expensive option.

How soon can asphalt be driven on?

Asphalt can take weeks to cure fully, but it can be driven on within a couple of days. Ask your contractor for specific timelines, as curing times may vary based on temperature, direct sunlight, and the weight of the vehicles driving on it. If the asphalt is driven on before it’s fully cured, be mindful of the surface condition and drive carefully. Sitting in the driveway for extended periods or turning the wheel to the left or right while stopped can leave blemishes on the asphalt.
