A massage is designed to be a very soothing experience that requires little preparation. However, if it's your first time getting one, you might be nervous if you don't know what to expect. During your massage, a massage therapist will work your muscles with oil to ease tension and reduce pain. Learn more about this technique, along with other need-to-know information, before your first massage.

Why Do Massage Therapists Use Oil?

massage therapistWhile a massage could theoretically be performed without oil, it makes the massage therapist's job much easier. The oil allows their hands to glide over the client's skin comfortably, reducing the friction that would typically occur with contact. Thus, massage oil can also make the massage better for the client.

Many oils also have moisturizing properties and, when absorbed by the skin, can have enriching and nourishing effects. Some oils have light fragrances which additionally contribute to a relaxing atmosphere.

What Should You Expect During a Massage?

Before your session, the massage therapist will likely ask you if there are any areas they should focus on or avoid. If they use oil, they may also ask you if you prefer a specific scent.

You will be given a robe to wear into the parlor. After meeting with you, your massage therapist will leave the room so you can undress and get under the blanket on the table. They will then begin the massage and continue for the designated amount of time.

Feel free to speak up during your session about any particularly sore areas that could benefit from more work. Also, alert your massage therapist if something doesn't feel right.
