Your HVAC filter plays a vital role in protecting your heating and cooling equipment from dust and other airborne contaminants. It also improves your indoor air quality and the energy efficiency of your system. However, not all filters are created equal. Here is a closer look at some of the most commonly used ones on the market today.

3 Types of HVAC Filter Options

1. Basic Air Filters

Most basic air filters are made from fiberglass, though foam and cotton are also sometimes used. These materials trap particles as the air passes through the filter. The better it is at trapping pollutants, the higher its MERV rating. These filters typically need to be replaced every 60 to 90 days. However, you may need to do so more frequently if you have pets or are sensitive to allergies.

2. HEPA Filter

HVACIf you do have a respiratory condition—like allergies or asthma—you should also consider upgrading to HEPA filters. The mesh of these screens is finer than with fiberglass filters, which means they remove more unwanted contaminants from the air, including bacteria and mold. However, because they are more discerning, they will need to be changed every month or two.

3. Activated Carbon Filter

Activated carbon HVAC filters work in conjunction with air purifiers. This makes them an especially popular choice for industrial facilities, as they can trap volatile organic compounds, eliminating toxic fumes and foul odors alike. They should be switched approximately every six months.
