A fruit tree is the gift that keeps on giving as long as you care for it correctly. One of the most important steps involved in tree care is pruning. This process needs to occur regularly throughout the plant's life to keep it healthy and productive. If you're new to the task, here's what you need to know.

3 Pruning Tips for Fruit Trees

1. Establish New Trees

With a new fruit tree, you have the opportunity to train it for optimal productivity. After planting it, cut it down to around 30 inches high or shorter, and trim shoots down until there are only one or two buds on each limb. During the following three years, pruning depends on the level of growth. For healthy, robust plants, only remove underperforming branches. Struggling fruit trees should be pruned frequently to encourage growth.

2. Remove Shaded, Diseased, & Broken Branches

pruningWhen you remove a limb or section of a limb, the tree reroutes its energy to healthier parts. That’s why broken branches should be cut away to avoid wasting nutrients where fruit can’t grow. The same applies to shaded branches because they're less likely to produce than ones with easy access to sunlight. Any limbs that show signs of disease also need to be removed to prevent the problem from spreading to other sections of the tree.

3. Prune to a Bud

Where a tree is pruned is just as vital to its success as the process itself. The cut needs to occur within a quarter of an inch of a bud for best results. If it's too close, then you risk the bud dying. Too far away, on the other hand, and it's harder for the tree to heal correctly. Also, aim to leave wide-angled, smooth cuts to avoid splitting.
