Throughout the summer, you were probably diligent about watering your lawn. Now that autumn is getting closer, your maintenance priorities will shift as growth slows and you begin preparing the grass for winter. Aeration is one of the most important lawn services you need this time of year. The guide below explains what it is and how it will benefit your yard.

What Is Aeration?

Over time, the soil in your lawn gets compacted as you walk on it. Additionally, rain and watering dampen the dirt and compact it further, minimizing the air that reaches the grass’s roots. Using a core aerator—a machine that pulls plug up out of the ground and creates small holes for the seed to drop into—R&T Lawn Services can help your grass get the air it needs. Initially, your lawn will have small plugs of dirt and grass scattered across it, but they’ll reintegrate into the lawn within several weeks.

Why You Should Aerate Your Lawn This Fall

Fall is the best time to seed your lawn to fix any lackluster patches and create ideal growing conditions. Aeration also improves water and fertilizer absorption, makes your grass more resistant to heat and drought, and improves drainage throughout the lawn.  We aerate, over seed, and fertilize in the fall because it is the optimal time to grow grass.  This is because of the soil temperature and ensures the grass is mature enough to make it through the summer months of the next year.

After aerating, you should water every day for a week, then every other day for a week. At this point, you can return to your regular watering routine. Just make sure you don’t water too often, or you could encourage mold growth and diseases. Aim to wet the soil 4 to 6 inches below the surface. Remember, it is always better to water longer periods of time less often than to water short periods more often.

Having a lawn service company aerate and provide watering tips will help your grass develop a robust root structure that weathers the winter.
