Quartz countertops are an increasingly popular option for homeowners who like the look of granite but don’t want to do a lot of maintenance. Because quartz is an engineered material, it is available in a wider variety of colors than granite and is typically slightly less expensive. Despite the advantages of quartz, though, there are some do’s and dont’s to keep in mind if you want to maintain the beauty of your countertops for many years.

Do:

Clean your countertops daily.

The honed surface of quartz countertops makes them more susceptible to fingerprints and other signs of use more obvious, so clean them with a soft rag and mild cleaner every day to maintain the shine. For a deep clean, use an ammonia-based glass cleaner, followed by a wipe down with a warm cloth.

Take care of stains quickly.

Quartz countertops can stain, so cleaning up spills and messes quickly is important. If you have a sticky mess, such as from syrup or caramel, spray on adhesive remover to easily and safely remove it. If spilled wine or juice, ink, or other items leave behind a stain that doesn't go away with soap and water, use isopropyl rubbing alcohol to wipe it away and follow-up with a warm water rinse.

Protect your quartz countertops.

quartz countertopsAlthough quartz is a durable material, it is not impervious to damage. Use trivets or mats below hot items like slow cookers and pans to prevent cracking, and always use a cutting board. The surface may be scratch-resistant, but it’s not scratch-proof, and using knives directly on the counter will cause damage and dull your knives.

Don’t:

Use harsh cleaners.

Many common household cleaners can damage quartz counters, dulling the shine and harming the bonds between the resins, stone, and polymers that comprise the surface. Use only gentle cleansers, like those designed for quartz, and avoid using bleach, turpentine, nail polish remover, and other harsh chemicals on or near the countertops.

Seal the surface.

Unlike granite, quartz does not require sealing. Simply cleaning the countertops regularly using mild soap and water will maintain the shine and finish.

Drop heavy objects on the counter.

Quartz countertops can chip or crack if heavy objects are dropped with too much force or there is too much pressure on them. Be cautious when placing heavy items on the counter, and avoid hitting the counters too hard; for example, use a mat or cutting board under meat when you’re tenderizing it to avoid damaging the counter.
