It’s the time of year when many people experience the symptoms of colds and the flu. A sore throat is a common issue during the cold season for a variety of reasons. While you definitely want to visit an urgent care clinic if symptoms persist, the following guide will help you pin down the underlying cause.

Why Does My Throat Hurt?

1. Viral Infections

Many sore throats are caused by viral infections that are associated with common colds and the flu. Most viruses are left to resolve on their own, and over-the-counter pain medications or decongestants can address symptoms. However, if you experience more serious symptoms, such as trouble breathing or a high fever, visit an urgent care facility.

2. Strep Throat

urgent careStrep throat is a bacterial infection that is spread via close contact with an infected person. It causes nausea, swollen tonsils, fever, headaches, and decreased appetite. Antibiotics are necessary to get rid of strep infections; however, you’ll need to visit an urgent care facility for a diagnosis and prescription.

3. Allergies

Fall allergies commonly cause throat tenderness and irritation. When caused by allergens, sore throats will generally last a long time and won’t be accompanied by fever or nausea. Get an allergy test to identify triggers, and ask your doctor about medications that help.

4. Strained Muscles

In some cases, sore throats aren’t linked to any underlying medical cause. It may simply be a result of talking at a high volume or too much. If you recently gave a long speech or yelled during a sports game,  drink a soothing herbal tea with lemon and honey.
