No matter how cautious you are behind the wheel, it’s likely that you’ll eventually need windshield repair. Even if you stay free from accidents, your windshield could suffer damage from a variety of factors, from inclement weather to incorrect installation. Here are five of the most common causes of cracked and damaged windshields.

Common Windshield Threats

1. Hail

While rain and snow don’t present a threat to the integrity of your windshield, hail is much denser. If it hits your car when you’re driving at high speeds, it’s going to make a substantial impact that may require windshield repair. Even smaller pieces can make a dent if you’re going too fast. If you’re driving during a hailstorm, slow down as much as the speed limit and flow of traffic allow. Try to find shelter, such as under a carport or inside a parking garage.

2. Gravel Roads

3. Excessive Sunlight

Too much exposure to UV rays can do more than leave the interior muggy, and the upholstery faded; it can also strain the windshield. Due to the metal surrounding the glass, the edges heat up more quickly. This temperature change causes these sections of the glass to expand and contract at a different rate than the center. Over time, this can lead to cracks.

4. Overhead Debris

Take note of your surroundings when you park. If your car is below a tree, there’s a chance that broken branches, nuts, or other debris could fall onto your windshield. Whenever possible, try to park in a protected environment, like a garage.
