Whether it’s for decoration, sustenance, or a bit of both, if you have a garden, you’ve likely encountered your fair share of weeds. These wild and unwanted plants are an inevitable aspect of gardening. Depending on how many are present, removing them may feel impossible. Fortunately, there are several organic treatments that have been proven to eliminate weeds.

How to Get Rid of Weeds Naturally

1. Vinegar, Salt, & Dish Soap

gardeningCreate a concoction of one gallon of white vinegar, one cup of table salt, and one tablespoon of liquid dish soap. Like any other plant, weeds need water, but vinegar and salt are desiccants and will draw out the moisture. Soap is a surfactant; it helps the mixture absorb into the weed instead of beading on the soil’s surface. Spray it liberally onto the weeds on a hot, dry day.

2. Salted, Boiling Water

For areas where you won’t be doing any gardening, like the driveway, use a simple mixture of hot water and salt. The salt dehydrates the plant, while the heat damages the leaves and root ball under the surface. Bring water to a boil, and generously add salt. Aim for a 2:1 ratio of hot water to salt.

3. Fabric & Mulch

To prevent weeds from flowering and seeding, cut them down, cover them with landscaping fabric, then add mulch on top. If you only have a few weeds, simply trim the heads with secateurs; if there are too many, mow them down. The fabric and mulch suffocate and overheat the plants, block out sunlight, and minimize the amount of water they receive. Although this method is effective, it requires patience.
