Asphalt is a popular material for driveways and roads because it is so easy to maintain. If you just it clean with some simple efforts, you can expect your blacktop to keep its new appearance for years. Take care of everyday cleaning and tackle stains with the guide below.

How to Clean Your Asphalt

1. Sweep & Pressure Wash

asphaltSweeping or using a leaf blower on your asphalt should be weekly cleaning to keep up its fresh appearance. Get everything inside the cracks along the edge of the surface. For tough post-storm leaf and vegetation stains, use a pressure washer.

2. Soak Up Spills Immediately

If car oil spills onto the asphalt, quickly soak up as much of it as you can with a rag; otherwise, the stain may set in. Afterward, sprinkle sawdust or kitty litter on the spill. Leave it overnight to give it time to pull up the remaining liquid.

3. Scrub Out Stains

Powdered laundry detergent is effective for oil stains; sprinkle it on and scrub the area with a little water. If this doesn’t work, you can use liquid dish soap or baking soda. Apply dish soap with water and let it sit for a few minutes to pull up the oil, then scrub and rinse. Baking soda is an excellent degreaser for stains that have already set; dampen the area and liberally apply the powder. Scrub it in with a hard-bristle brush, then let it work for 30 minutes before rinsing it off.
