You may have noticed frost buildups in your freezer that take up storage space or cause unpleasant odors. Fortunately, it’s easy to remove ice deposits and get your cold storage running normally again. Below are a few appliance repair and maintenance tips to help.

3 Ways to Fix Your Icy Freezer

1. Check the Door & Gasket

When the door does not close tightly, moist room temperature air seeps into the freezer, resulting in frost. Wipe the seal, so the door closes properly and is moisture-free. However, if you notice tears or holes, a professional will need to replace it.

2. Manage the Defrost Thermostat

Thermostats are responsible for warming the defrost heater, which prevents ice from developing on the evaporator coils. A broken thermostat’s timer may only run for a couple of minutes, which won’t energize the heater long enough to melt excess ice. Appliance repair professionals suggest having the timer replaced; depending on your freezer model, the timing component could be in different locations. The work would also involve electrical wiring.

3. Use Preventative Measures

To ensure your components run properly, keep the manufacturer’s recommended settings on, and limit how often you open the door to prevent overworking it. When you stock the area, only put up to 3 pounds of food per cubic foot. Most importantly, never put hot items in your freezer because they add moisture, which increases frost.
