Whether it’s across town or to an entirely different state, moving is almost always a marathon of tasks to complete and essential items you feel like you’re forgetting. Between coordinating moving services and making sure everything is as ready as it can be on both ends of the move, planning this transition can feel like a juggling act. Moving out of state creates a few more elements to add to the to-do list, but if you plan, it makes the process a lot easier. As you build your list and organize your move, keep these three tips in mind to make the process a little smoother.

3 Out of State Moving Tips

1. Change Your Address

Changing your address is a process in several different parts. Alert any companies that send subscriptions to your home, such as magazines, subscription boxes, and newspapers. Some will need to be cancelled, like your newspaper, while some will need an address change. Notify your utility providers, such as electric, gas, and cable, in advance so that they are shut off by the time you leave. In the days before your move, change your address with the post office as well.

2. Go Through Your Belongings

Moving Services Cambridge, MNEven if you plan on having a moving service transport your belongings, you’ll still want to scale down the number of items you’re moving from one state to another. Not only is this more cost-effective, but you also won’t get to your new place with a large number of items you no longer want or need. Go through closets, drawers, and areas of home storage and create piles for trash, donation, and items to sell. Unloading these before you begin packing for the move saves you from having to deal with them later on.

3. Licenses

When you get to your new state, you will need to get a new driver’s license. Each state will have different rules regarding how much time you have to do this, so be sure to look into it ahead of time. This may not be the only license you will need to update. Professional permits will need to be updated as well, such as those for realtors, teachers, and doctors or nurses.
