Regularly flossing your teeth is part of good oral hygiene. Regular proper flossing eliminates the plaque that causes tooth decay and gum disease. Flossing should be done once a day and can be done at any time of the day. Watch for these common mistakes your children may make while flossing to redirect their oral hygiene routine.

Common Flossing Problems Your Children Might Experience

1. Flossing Too Fast

Your child should spend 10 seconds flossing between each set of teeth. Rushing leaves plaque behind, resulting in unwanted cavities and a trip to the dentist. If your child is rushing through the flossing session, consider changing the time of day they floss. For example, if they’re rushing to make the school bus, have them floss after dinner instead.

2. Stopping Because of Bleeding Oral Hygiene

Gums that aren't used to proper flossing will bleed a bit. This is a normal part of oral hygiene and should stop after a few days of consistent flossing. If your child continues to notice bleeding, they may be flossing too much or need to try a different type of floss. Talk to a dentist if you’re concerned.

3. Only Flossing

While flossing only needs to be done once a day, it should always be paired with brushing twice daily. Make sure your child spends the proper amount of time flossing between each tooth every day. Teach your child how to floss, and if you can, lead by example by flossing with them.
