Riding a motorcycle on the open road is exhilarating, but you must take precautions to protect yourself and your bike. Always wear a helmet and the right gear, and never risk riding a motorcycle without insurance. A reputable insurance agency will make sure you have the coverage you need.

What Insurance Is Required for Motorcyclists in Ohio?

In Ohio, your policy must meet the minimum insurance requirements for motorcycles, or you must meet the state’s proof-of-financial-responsibility standards. These standards are met if a surety company issues you a $30,000 bond or if you deposit $30,000 in cash with the state treasurer. Contacting your insurance agency to obtain insurance is the conventional way to comply with Ohio law. Liability insurance is also required for all vehicles in Ohio, including motorcycles. The minimum requirements for motorcycle insurance are as follows:

  • $25,000 bodily injury coverage for a one-person accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury coverage for accidents involving two or more people
  • $25,000 coverage for property damage

Your policy must meet all three stipulations to be valid in Ohio.

What Are the Consequences of Driving Without Insurance?

If you’re stopped by the police and fail to prove you have valid insurance, you may lose your driver's license, license plates, and vehicle registration for a length of time. If it's your first offense, you’ll lose your license until the other requirements are met, which includes paying a $100 reinstatement fee for your license plates and registration. Other fees may be issued by a court. For a second offense, you’ll lose your license for a year and pay a $300 reinstatement fee. Again, other fees may be assessed. If it's your third (or more) offense, the penalties increase. You’ll lose your license for two years and pay a $600 reinstatement fee.
