If you have pets or kids, you’ll know how vulnerable your carpet is to the wear and tear of everyday life. Muddy paw prints, bits of crayons, and splattered food are par for the course. Even if you’re living on your own, food or wine stains are a very real possibility. While hiring a professional carpet cleaner is the only way you can truly deep clean your flooring, here are some tips on how to minimize or eliminate everyday stains in between professional cleans.

Solutions for 3 Common Carpet Stains

1. Nail Polish

If you spill nail polish onto your carpet, there’s no need to worry. Simply dip a clean rag in nail varnish remover and gently blot the area. If the nail polish has already dried, you can apply hairspray and rubbing alcohol to the stain before softly scrubbing it with a brush and cold water. Contact a professional carpet cleaner if you’re having trouble getting the stain out.

2. Urine

Carpet cleanerIf you’ve ever had the pleasure of potty training a toddler or house training a puppy, you’ll know that urine splashes are an unfortunate risk of the job. Grab a stack of paper towels and soak up as much as you can as quickly as you can, then blot using a clean, damp cloth. Then mix one part white vinegar with one part water and spray, covering the whole stain. Finally, mix a half-teaspoon of clear, mild, non-bleach detergent with 32 ounces of water, and rinse the stain by pressing this homemade carpet cleaner into the fabric. Blot the spot dry.

3. Milk, Juice, & Soft Drinks

If you spill your drink onto the carpet, clean it up quickly. Milk may not discolor your carpet much, but it will leave behind a powerful odor if it sets into the fabric. Blot the stain and then dry it, working from the outside in. Mix a quarter-teaspoon of white vinegar with 32 ounces of water, and rinse the stain by pressing the mix into the carpet. Never scrub, as you can damage the carpet fibers. Blot again and leave to dry.
