You depend on a water heater to supply your home with hot water whenever the taps are turned on. However, it's not uncommon for homeowners to be unaware of water heater issues—until they realize that there is no hot water or only a weak stream of pressure. Often, leaks are the culprit behind these issues. Here are a few of the most common causes of water heater leaks.

Why Does a Water Heater Leak?

1. Excess Water Pressure

If the water pressure inside the heater's tank is too high, it will start to leak as a means of lowering the buildup of pressure. This often happens when the temperature of the water heater is set too high. It can also result from high pressure in the water supply coming from the outside of the home. If you notice a marked decrease in pressure from your faucets, it may be a leaking water heater that needs professional plumbing repairs.

2. Loose Drain Valve

There are several reasons a valve might loosen, but most of them are innocuous and easily fixable, like someone or something inadvertently bumping into the valve. If you see water coming out of the drain valve, contact a plumber to ensure it’s tightened properly and the leak completely stops.

3. Rusty Tank

Water heaters are built to last, but that does not mean they won't occasionally need to be replaced. A common indicator of age and excessive wear is a tank that has started to rust. The corrosion will eat holes and cracks into the tank, which makes it unable to efficiently hold water. Leaking then results, and you'll likely notice water around the base of the heater. Call a plumber to explore your options for repairs or a replacement.
