If you need extra storage space in your kitchen, adding new cabinets to your existing design is a relatively easy and affordable solution. But when mixing old and new cabinetry, the styles can sometimes clash. Below are a few tips to remedy this problem while still reaping the benefits of added cabinet space.

How to Best Mix Old & New Cabinets

1. Align Height

Try to install cabinets of equal height, especially if they will be serving as counter space as well. If the surface isn’t level, it will look noticeably out of place. Matching the size of the old and new kitchen cabinets will make your kitchen seem like a unified whole, which is more visually appealing.

2. Coordinate Colors

cabinetsA uniform color scheme will pull disparate cabinetry together. Paint or stain new cabinets to match the old, or vice versa. A fresh coat on old cabinets can also disguise age and wear and tear. If the old cabinets are made out of wood and the new ones are made from another material, consider applying a faux woodgrain finish to the new addition to match with the existing cabinetry.

3. Keep It Simple

Aim to match your cabinet styles as closely as you can; however, if you can't find an exact replica of old cabinets, the best option may be to keep the new ones simple. A basic design may fit in better with your unique cabinetry than another, entirely different but equally ornate one. However, there are cases where different cabinet styles can complement one another without being noticeably mismatched — just be sure to avoid overloading the room with too many contrasting styles.
