Do you think you have gum disease?, Glastonbury, Connecticut

Gingivitis is one of the most common oral health issues and a precursor to more serious complications. Understanding more about it will help you know when to seek out a dentist to reverse its effects and prevent gum disease. To help you care for your gums and pearly whites, here’s all you need to know about this condition.

Understanding Gingivitis

What Is It?

Gingivitis is an early form of gum disease. It develops when plaque forms along the gum line and hardens into tartar. It can lead to inflammation, and when left untreated, progress into gum disease. Poor dental care habits, tobacco use, dry mouth, and a sugary diet are just a few risk factors.

Gum disease can result in tissue damage, bone loss, and tooth loss, which is why it’s important to get gingivitis under control. The disease has also been linked to cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological conditions when decay-causing bacteria enter the bloodstream through open wounds in the mouth.

What Are the Symptoms?

Next time you brush your teeth, look for the following symptoms:

  • dentistRed or swollen gums, especially around the gum line
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Receding gum line
  • Tenderness
  • Bad breath

How Is It Treated?

Gingivitis is highly treatable, so visit your dentist if you have concerns about any symptoms. A professional cleaning can undo many of these effects. By removing tartar and plaque from around and below the gum line, a dentist will reduce much of the inflammation caused by this stage of gum disease.

You’ll need to continue brushing and flossing at least twice a day at home to prevent plaque formation. Cutting down on sweets, acidic foods, sugary drinks, and other items that contribute to tooth decay is also helpful for restoring your oral health.
