As the weather cools down, it’s time to start thinking about cups of cocoa, cozy sweaters, and your furnace. Months have passed since you last used it, so stay ahead of winter by preparing it before you need to turn it on again. Here are five ways to help ensure it runs safely and effectively through the coming season.

How to Get Your Furnace Ready for the Cold

1. Clean the Unit & Surrounding Area

Start by vacuuming the base and burners for dust and debris. If you have a washable filter, clean it well. If it’s disposable, buy a replacement and swap it out. Just as importantly, move clutter and flammable objects away from the unit.

2. Inspect the Blower Belt

furnaceCheck the blower belt for cracks and replace it if you notice any. Oiling the blower motor is recommended once a year to maintain effective performance and prevent any unusual sounds, so take care of this task if you haven’t since last autumn.

3. Inspect the Furnace’s Chimney

Carefully inspect the unit’s chimney for blockages, debris, and soot buildup, which could cause a fire. If you notice significant buildup or if it’s been a while since your chimney was last cleaned, call a professional to handle this intensive chore.

4. Inspect & Clean Air Vents

Make sure nothing is blocking the air vents, as obstructed vents make your furnace work harder and could cause it to overheat. Then vacuum the vents for dust and debris. This will promote better indoor air quality along with the fresh filter while making the home safer.

5. Test the Thermostat

Switch the thermostat from cooling to heating, then set the temperature slightly above the current room temperature. If the heat doesn’t kick on after a minute or so, call a professional to diagnose and resolve the issue. The issue could be with the thermostat or the heating unit itself.
