As you brace for colder weather, your landscaping will need a little extra TLC. From the lawn to the garden, you can protect your property through the winter and give yourself a head start come spring if you’re proactive now. Make a checklist that includes the following essential tasks.

5 Landscaping Musts for the End of Summer

1. Check for Pests

Insects and other pests will try to eat your shrubs and trees more ardently toward the end of the summer because the change in weather and water availability makes them less resistant to attack. Keep your plants alive by getting rid of the pests before it gets cold.

2. Distribute Seeds and Bulbs

landscapingFigure out what you want to plant for the late summer and fall and start getting ready to sow and harvest them. Beans, carrots, cucumbers, radishes, peas, lettuce, squash, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, chrysanthemums, wildflowers, asters, daisies, and pansies are all hardy choices for this time of year. Also, overseed dead patches of grass, then use a slow-release fertilizer to revive them.

3. Water Conservatively

This late in the summer, your yard only needs about one inch of water per week. Sprinklers or rain barrels are fine, but you can also have a landscaping expert install a drip irrigation system, which is more effective because it’s easier for the grass and plants absorb the water in their roots.

4. Neaten the Plants

Set aside some time for trimming and pruning your shrubs and trees, making sure to remove dead flower heads as well. If you notice any dead limbs or branches on your trees, break them off and throw them away. Otherwise, their diseases may spread, or they could fall off during a storm and cause damage elsewhere.

5. Make Repairs

Check your landscaping tools, such as your lawn mower and trimmer machine, to see whether they need maintenance before sitting idle for several months. Fix any areas in your fences, hardscape structures, and furniture that have sustained damage, and fill holes dug by your pets.
