A Fall Auto Maintenance Checklist, East Franklin, Pennsylvania

Now that summer is winding down, it’s the ideal time to prepare your car for the challenges of driving during the cold season. In addition to your usual routine auto maintenance, there are some season-specific tasks that will help ensure your vehicle is ready for the upcoming seasons. Here’s what you need to know.

6 Fall Auto Maintenance Tasks

1. Fluids

The fluids that make your car run are essential components for ensuring a safe and comfortable ride. Have the oil changed; top off the antifreeze and windshield wiper fluids; and check the transmission, brake, and power steering fluids and fill as needed.

2. Battery

auto maintenanceIn the heat of summer, the fluid in a car battery can dry up, leading to a potentially dangerous situation in the cold. The battery will need to work harder to start the vehicle. Further, without enough juice, the battery won't be able to start at all, leaving you stranded. Inspect the component to make sure there’s no rust or fluid leakage. If your battery is over a few years old, replace it.

3. Brakes

The brakes are crucial for controlling a vehicle at any time of year, but they are especially important for coming to a safe stop during cold weather. Pads, rotors, calipers, hoses, drums, cylinders, and shoes should all be checked as part of a comprehensive brake assessment.

4. Belts, Filters, & Hoses

Any auto maintenance checklist should include a visual inspection of the belts, filters, and hoses. Confirm that all the connections are tight and that there are no obvious signs of wear and tear, breakage, or fraying.

5. Tires

To maintain the traction, tires should be sufficiently inflated and free of visible signs of wear and damage. Measure the tread depth as well, as this will tell you if you need new tires. The penny test is a quick and easy way to perform this assessment. Insert a penny upside-down, with Lincoln's head facing you, and if you can see all of Lincoln's head, it's time to get new tires.

6. Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers provide you with a clear view of the road as you drive in inclement weather. Test them out and check their physical condition. If they have damage or aren't effective at removing debris, replace them.
