The possibility of water heater repairs can be daunting, especially since they are designed to last so long. However small that leak appears though, it’s important to have minor water heater repairs taken care of when you spot them. Waiting to get repairs done can result in more extensive repairs, including a water heater replacement.

4 Possible Causes of Your Water Heater Leak

1. Temperature & Pressure Relief Valve

Regulating the pressure and temperature within the tank keeps your heater running smoothly and efficiently. If the valve is broken and the reading is wrong, it may force water out of the tank. However, if it’s not broken, then the problem may actually be too much water in the tank.

2. Inlet & Outlet Connections

Check the inlet and outlet pipe connections to see if they are loose and tighten them accordingly. If the connection is not loose, it may simply be a matter of replacing the pipeline.

3. Tank Liner

After years of use, sediment and dirt will begin to collect at the bottom of your water heater. This build-up can lead to corrosion and deterioration in the tank liner, causing multiple leaks. Unfortunately, by the time most people are calling their contractor, it is too late for water heater repairs and time to replace the entire tank.

if your water heater is also connected to a water softener or a backflow preventer it is a good idea add an expansion tank as well.
