The brakes are some of the most critical safety features in your car. When they fail, you and everyone on the road around you are in danger. All drivers should work with their mechanic to keep their brakes in pristine condition. By knowing the most common causes behind brake failure, you can work to prevent it in your own vehicle.

Mechanic’s Guide to Brake Failure Causes

1. Neglect

mechanic-concord-ncNeglect is the most common cause of failure. Brake pads typically last around 40,000 miles while rotors last between 30,000 and 70,000 miles. Your mechanic should inspect the brakes every time you have your tires rotated, which is about every six months. If your pads are wearing low or there is any damage, you’ll need to have it repaired immediately. This will allow you to fix the small issues before they cause more damage and make the brakes fail.

2. Overheating

Brake pads can overheat when they are used too much. Even if the brakes do not immediately fail while they are overheated, the heat makes the pads hard and brittle, so they cannot grip the rotor disk properly. Always tap the brakes rather than applying constant pressure, especially when traveling down a large hill.

3. Natural Lubrication

Driving through mud or water will naturally lubricate the pads and rotor disks. This moisture between the two affects the friction. Avoid driving through deep puddles. If you do submerge your wheels, gently tap the brakes to shake off the excess water.

4. Fluid Leak

The hydraulic fluid controls the pressure between your brake pedal and the pads. When it leaks from the brake lines, pushing down on the pedal won’t have the braking power that it should. Keep an eye out for fluid leaking under your car, and take it in immediately if you feel that stopping has become difficult.
