If you're providing senior care for a loved one, you have the potential to grow closer as a family or create conflict. A few ground rules will help both you and your family member live more comfortably together. To help you care for their well-being and your own, here are a few do’s and don’ts to guide you.

Do:

Put yourself in your loved one's shoes.

When you're trying to take care of someone else, it can be easy to get frustrated with them, especially if they seem uncooperative. Taking the time to listen to them and treat them with respect will help relieve these feelings and reduce conflict. Try not to offer unsolicited advice or take over tasks your loved one can do on their own. Feeling independent is important for mental health, so respect their privacy whenever you can.

Stay flexible.

Senior CareYour loved one's health and mental ability will change over time, and so will their needs. If you’re caring for them at home, you must be ready to adapt with them. Be open to changes in routine and willing to accept requests and constructive criticism.

Don't:

Lose track of spending.

The costs of senior care can build up if you aren't careful. Keep track of what you spend on your loved one's care, including medications, transportation, and groceries. Be frank about money and try to stay within their budget to avoid problems. If costs start racking up, an assisted living facility may be more affordable.

Get burnt out.

Caregiver fatigue may happen when you have to be available all day without breaks. To prevent this type of stress, you need days off and even vacations to rest from both the physical and emotional aspects of this labor. Some assisted living communities offer respite care to take over for a few days or weeks so you can have the break you need and deserve.
