Perfect for going camping and taking cross-country road trips, RVs are popular with many people of all ages and backgrounds. They’re much more convenient than driving a truck, and more affordable than renting a hotel room. However, maintaining these advantages requires a bit of care, especially in regards to the septic system. It’s comprised of a series of holding tanks, and there are a handful of tasks you need to do and invest in, such as RV tank pumping. If you’re unfamiliar with the septic system, here is what you need to know.

A Guide to Holding Tanks in RV Septic Systems

Different Types

Before diving into caring for them, it’s essential to understand the basics. There are two holding tanks in an RV: one for the greywater and another for wastewater. The greywater tank connects to the kitchen and shower drains; it’s meant for dirty water that doesn’t contain solids. The wastewater tank, however, connects to the toilet and contains human waste. Sometimes it’s also referred to as the black water tank.

When to Empty the Holding Tanks

How often you schedule RV tank pumping depends on how many passengers you have. Once it's about ⅔ full, take it to a designated RV tank dumping station. Always start with the wastewater tank; by following it up with the greywater, you can rinse out the solids left in the sewer hose. Afterward, use an RV holding tank-specific sanitizer each time.

Maintenance

Aside from regularly emptying and occasional RV tank pumping, you can maintain healthy holding tanks by using septic system enzyme treatments. These are formulated to biologically digest the solids so they’re easier to drain. Also, make sure every passenger knows to use single-ply toilet paper and to not flush sanitary napkins or wipes in the toilet, as these can clog the tanks.
