When you’re ready to enter the work field, having business cards on your person is a quick way to leave your details with new contacts. This is especially important when attending alumni events, where the networking possibilities often have a strong payoff. However, to make a good impression, use this guide when giving out your card.

Do:

Make connections first.

When attending alumni events or any networking opportunity, it’s better to chat with people and get to know them before mentioning your business card. Ideally, you want to find out who you’re talking to and what they do and let them get a clear idea of who you are before bringing cards into the situation.

Ask if you can give your card.

alumni eventProper business card etiquette is to ask someone if they’d like your card instead of just giving it to them. If you’re unsure how to do this, try asking for their card, then asking if they’d like yours in return. This allows you to get in some useful conversation first, look professional, and continue networking with others present at the event.

Don’t:

Give more than one.

Unless the person has asked for multiple cards, don’t hand them more than one. They might feel imposed upon since giving multiple cards implies you want them to help market your talents or business.

Hand out an unprofessional card.

Take the time to put together a professional card. It should provide clear contact information, such as your email address, business phone number, and a link to your resume or portfolio. Even if you’re not in a design-oriented business, don’t be afraid to get creative with the layout and formatting as long as it remains straightforward to read.
