With Halloween quickly approaching, children across the country are thinking about their costumes and making trick-or-treating plans. While this holiday can be fun for the entire family, dentists remind parents that increased candy consumption can lead to cavities and other oral health issues. With this in mind, here are a few dentist-approved ways to maintain healthy teeth and gums on Halloween.

4 Ways to Promote Oral Health on Halloween

1. Establish Rules on Candy Consumption

Dentists know that prohibiting your child from enjoying candy completely around Halloween is close to impossible. Instead, establish some rules when it comes to candy consumption. Leave the candy supply in your hands so your child can’t sneak treats before breakfast or bedtime. Set a limit on the amount of candy your little one can have in a day.

2. Check the Candy Stash

DentistOnce the evening of trick-or-treating is complete, sit down with your child to check out their stash. Restrict the amount of hard candy, sour gummies, and sticky treats like caramel and taffy your little one is allowed to eat. These high-acidity, high-sugar bites linger on teeth and are more likely to cause decay.

3. Prioritize Hydration

When consuming candy, make sure your child drinks plenty of water. Water can help wash away the sugar and acidity that promotes harmful mouth bacteria and in turn, can reduce the risk of plaque buildup and cavities.

4. Require Brushing & Flossing

In exchange for indulging in a few pieces of Halloween candy after dinner, have your children brush and floss their teeth thoroughly. This will eliminate sugar and sticky residue from tooth surfaces and in between teeth. Should your child be due for a bi-annual teeth cleaning with their dentist, post-Halloween is the perfect time to schedule this appointment.
