Historically, aerial imaging was primarily performed using a helicopter or plane. Helicopters were used for low, slow-mapping projects, while airplane surveys were performed from higher elevations. Photographs of a property would be taken from the crafts. The introduction of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) allowed for elevation measurements, which could be used to create 3D models of the area.

Most recently, however, the introduction of drones has made aerial imaging more easily accessible. Though drones don’t have as wide a field of view as other aircraft, they’re ideally suited for surveying smaller properties. Drone photography can be stitched together using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to produce highly accurate 3D models.

Drones are relatively inexpensive and can survey a small area rather quickly. For larger properties, however, navigating a drone back and forth is inefficient. A helicopter or airplane could get the job done much faster.

Additionally, regulations surrounding the use of drones continues to be somewhat murky. Drone accidents are a serious liability concern when performing imaging over a populated area. Despite these concerns, advances in drone tech, like improved fail-safes and automated “come home” settings, are improving reliability.
