Another Visit to the Research Farm

This past week I had the opportunity to host another group to visit the Purina Research Farm in Gray Summit, MO.  We visit twice each year and I continue to be amazed at the new things that the research team has accomplished.  This trip we learned that the Immunology and Microbiology Lab has developed a “Probiotic package” that has been added to all Purina Cattle Starters to support good “gut health”.  They learned that the bacteria population in the intestines of cattle dictate the level of disease resistance (immunity) that is created.  It’s called RX3 Immune Support Technology.  It influences the Innate Immune System so calves can Recognize disease sooner, Respond more appropriately, and Recover more quickly.  This has taken the place of using antibiotics in cattle starters.  Thanks again to the Lab Team for coming with “leading edge” technology!

Consider Weaning Calves

Many parts of Texas are experiencing hot, dry weather as we move into the early Fall.  Some areas have gotten a little rain, but many have not.  This weather pattern has stressed our forage conditions and that is presenting a challenge for brood cows, particularly those with spring calves by their side.

Weaning calves will reduce the energy needed by the cow and also help the calf continue to grow.  Following are several thoughts on a good weaning program.

1. Establish what you will do with the calves after weaning……...replacement heifers, market at sale barn, market in a special sale, retain ownership to market at a later date?

2. Provide a weaning trap that has shade and plenty of fresh water.

3. Use your best hay and choose whether you will hand feed the cattle or use a self feeder.

4. Choose the right vaccination program to fit your marketing plan for the cattle.

5. Monitor the cattle closely for the first 7-10 days.

Calf Weaning Feed Choices

Purina PreCon

Cattlemen should hand-feed this product.  It is the most palatable feed on the market…...has been the standard for weaning/receiving cattle for 50 years.

Purina Accuration Starter

This product enable cattle to achieve maximum gain during the weaning period.  It can be hand-fed or can be put in a bulk feeder to save labor and money.  It is very safe.  It contains Purina IM Technology.

Red Chain Stocker 10

This is an economy product that should be hand-fed.  Cattle eat it well.  Hay should be provided if using this product.

Stress Tubs

These molasses based tubs should be used in addition to the above products.  They provide a familiar product for cattle to lick while in the weaning pen.  Calves produce extra saliva that buffers the rumen pH and encourages microbe growth.

Special VAC 45 Sale Update

The next VAC 45 calf sale is scheduled for Monday, September 9 at Meridian Livestock Commission as part of their regular Monday sales.  The special VAC 45 calves will be sold prior to the regular calf sale.  If you have calves ready for this sale and have not registered, please give us a call and we will help you get the registration forms filled out.  The sale barn needs to be able to advertise the VAC 45 calves to buyers.  Start planning now to participate in one of the two remaining future sales.

November 11 Sale calves should be weaned by September 26th and the December 9 Sale calves should be weaned by October 24th.  Let us know if you have any questions?  We are glad to help!
