Generators are meant to keep your home powered when the electricity is out. Don’t wait until the middle of storm season to find out that you’ve left your standby generator sitting for too long without proper maintenance. With regular tune-ups and inspections performed by a licensed electrician, your generator is sure to last for decades and be ready to use whenever you need it.

4 Home Generator Maintenance Tips

1. Change the Fluids

Think of your generator’s engine the same way you think of your car’s engine. You wouldn’t leave unused gas and oil sitting inside a stationary car for months or years. Change your generator’s oil at the beginning of every storm season to make sure it’s fresh. You should also check the levels before and after every use. New gasoline with additional fuel stabilizer should be added to the tank every 30 days or so.

2. Inspect the Replaceable Parts

Complete a quick visual inspection for any damaged parts or corrosion. Take the air filter out and see if it is dirty and damaged enough to need a replacement. Then, you should inspect the spark plugs to see if they need to be replaced. Finally, make sure that no bolts have been shaken loose by the vibrations of the generator. If you find anything wrong with your generator, be sure to call a licensed electrician to have it repaired before the storm season.

3. Conduct a Test Run

electricianIf nothing is obviously wrong with your generator, it’s time to turn it on to make sure it’s running properly. Let it run for about 15 minutes and test its output by plugging a few small appliances into it. Try a cellphone charger or a hairdryer. Perform this test every time you plan on running the generator. If it doesn’t come on or your appliances aren’t getting power, it’s time to call an electrician.

4. Have an Experienced Electrician Perform a Full Tune-Up

At the beginning of every storm season, you should have a professional electrician tune-up your generator. An electrician will be able to catch problems that might not be so obvious to you. This can help you avoid any electrical failures when you need power the most.
