Bacon is one of the most common and well-loved ingredients in modern American food. You may think that the only thing you need to know about it is that it's delicious, but there are many interesting facts about it too. Even if you don't need to know these tidbits to enjoy the taste of bacon, your appreciation for it will grow with your knowledge.

Where Did the Word “Bacon” Come From?

As with most English words, the word "bacon" comes from many different places. The Proto-Germanic civilization first used the word "backoz" to refer to the back. Old High German later modified this word to become "bacho," or "buttock." Before the first millennium closed on the era of the Saxons, "bacoun" was used in Middle English to describe pork meat taken from a specific pig breed's belly. The Old French of the 14th century also had the word "bacun" to refer to this back meat. Over time, English evolved the word into its present form—bacon—and applied it to all cuts of cured pork.

What is the History of Bacon?

American foodBack in 1500 B.C., China became the first known civilization to consume bacon. Ancient Greece and Rome enjoyed it as well, spreading the cured meat throughout Europe. In the 12th century, bacon was used in England as a reward for men who went over a year without quarreling with their wives. This is where the phrase "bring home the bacon" came from, which later signified earning income. The Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto was responsible for bringing bacon to the Americas, sharing it with Native Americans.

During the Industrial Revolution, the process of curing bacon was streamlined. Although it had always been a popular meat product throughout the world, this is when it became a staple of working-class American food. From there, bacon steadily grew in use and popularity.

However, it goes beyond American food as well. Bacon is frequently used as a food product, or simply as a flavor, in sandwiches, chowders, jams, ice creams, cakes, and even lip balms, deodorants, and air fresheners. Modern-day obsession with bacon proves that it will continue to be one of the best-loved foods in human history.
