Many people experience shoulder pain at work. Repetitive actions—whether mousing through spreadsheets, swiping items at a checkout counter, toting heavy boxes, or operating a forklift—can strain shoulder muscles and tendons. Use the strategies below to reduce joint pain.

How to Minimize Shoulder Joint Pain

1. Practice Good Posture

joint painFor those who use a computer all day, good posture and desk setup are essential. Keep the screen at arm’s length. Align wrists, forearms, and hands, and bend elbows at a 90-degree angle. The top of a screen shouldn’t be any higher than your eyes. Position feet flat on the floor, and use a chair with lumbar support for the lower back.

2. Move Around

Joint pain often occurs when people hold the same position for hours at a time. Movement gives joints some relief and exercises tendons. Take scheduled breaks to move about throughout the day. Don’t run all errands at once. Instead, once every hour or two, take a short walk. Moving your mouse from one side of your keyboard to the other and shifting your weight when sitting will also help prevent joint pain.

3. Take a Break

Take a 30-second break every half hour. Shake your hands and arms, and refocus your vision about 20 feet into the distance. Check your shoulder position and tension. They should be relaxed, and your posture should be erect. Roll your neck from side to side, stretching the tendons.
