If you're running out of space in your home or you want to declutter, renting a storage unit can make a huge difference. When you want to store something valuable and delicate like electronics, take extra care to avoid damaging them during their stay. Here are the basics for storing electronics safely so they'll be in working condition when you take them out again.

Do:

Use the right packaging.

The original packages for electronics are best for storage since they're custom-fitted to keep the items in good shape. If that isn't available, choose a cardboard box with plenty of padding. Don't wrap your items in plastic. While you may want to use it to keep water out, it can also seal any moisture in, increasing the damage instead of letting the items dry out if they get wet.

Take everything apart.

StorageTo avoid wearing out plugs and cords, unplug everything you can and store it all separately. If your device has multiple pieces, take it apart for storage to avoid rusting or corrosion at the connection point that might make the pieces stick together. Finally, remove any disks, tapes, cartridges, or cards to keep them from getting stuck and so you don't forget what's in the unit.

Don't:

Forget how pieces go together.

Before you unplug or disassemble your system, take several pictures, which will help you put it back together when it comes out of storage. Store the various pieces of the system in the same place, preferably in one box, so nothing gets lost.

Store it on the floor.

Items on the floor are the most likely to be water-damaged. They’re also more likely to be tripped over, scuffed, scratched, or hit by other items. Whenever possible, keep your electronics on a shelf or at least a pallet.
