What to Expect When Getting Your Pupils Dilated, Prospect, Connecticut

When you go to an eye exam, you’ll be asked to read letters off a chart to test your eyesight. What you may not expect, though, is to have your pupils dilated. Although this is a routine part of many exams, a lot of people are unsure about what this procedure entails and why it’s necessary. The following guide aims to clarify this subject, so you can walk into your next appointment with ease.

Understanding Why Doctors Dilate Pupils

Why Do Doctors Dilate Pupils?

The pupils are key components of your overall eye health, and dilating them allows optometrists to garner a better understanding of their condition. By causing the pupils to become larger and let more light in, your doctor can review the muscles and tissues at the back of the eye. This also makes it easier for them to pinpoint any warning signs of developing issues, such as glaucoma or retinal detachment.

What Should You Expect?

eye examAt the beginning of the eye exam, the optometrist will administer drops to both pupils. Once they have expanded fully, the doctor will shine a light on the eyes while examining them with a magnifying lens. After the physical examination, they will perform the routine tests associated with a general exam, such as a visual acuity and field test.

How Long Does Dilation Last?

After the eye exam, you’ll be more sensitive to bright lights, so the optometrist will suggest wearing sunglasses for the rest of the day, even if the weather is overcast. The dilation itself should wear off after four to six hours. Since you’ll have blurry vision, make sure to take someone to the appointment with you, so they can drive you home. While you can’t do anything to regain your vision until the solution wears off, it’s best not to operate machinery or drive for the rest of the day.
