It can seem like a lot of work if you are a non-English speaker trying to encourage your child to read in English. Early childhood learning is the best time to adopt another language, and children who are taught to be bilingual at a young age can approach the rest of their school years with a solid foundation of skills. Here are a few ways to encourage your young child to read in another language.

How to Encourage Bilingual Reading Habits

1. Learn Cross-Language Skills

Cross-language skills are basic word tasks, such as rhyming, vocabulary repetition, and games, that apply to young children—regardless of the language. These are all important tools for early childhood learning in any language, but they can also help build a second language foundation that is engaging and fun; they allow your child to learn how to manipulate the sounds and tones of the new language in a unique way.

2. Read Aloud Together

Not only do you help them understand the context and intonation of vocabulary, but it also gives you valuable one-on-one time with your child, as well. If you are learning a new language along with them, it’s a wonderful opportunity to practice together.

3. Use Dual-Language Books

Dual-language books present a story in two languages. This allows you to read the story in the child’s native language and then repeat the same line in the new language. This can help build vocabulary skills and intuitive sentence structure, while being less daunting and more entertaining for your child.
