When someone you care about has lost a loved one, you naturally want to be there for them. This can seem tough to do if you do not live in the area, but there are always ways that you can show love and support. Try any of the measures below to help them through this difficult time, even if you cannot make it to the memorial service.

How to Support a Grieving Loved One from Far Away

1. Send Flowers

memorial serviceIf you cannot attend the memorial service, send some flowers with a sympathy card. This is an excellent way to show your support and indicate that you’re thinking of them, even if you cannot be there in person. Every time they look at the funeral flowers, they’ll remember that you care and are there in spirit.

2. Make a Call

A phone call is a simple and effective way to reach out. Keep in mind that they may be a little overwhelmed at the moment, so you’ll need to work around their schedule in finding a time to talk. Follow their lead in the conversation. Sometimes they may need someone to just listen to them as they explain how they feel, while other times they may want a fun conversation to distract them from their grief. Either way, you can provide what they need over the phone.

3. Visit in the Future

You may not be able to take time off work at the last minute to attend the memorial service, but you could visit in the future. This may actually be more valuable than attending the funeral service, since they will have a lot of support at that time. In the months following the death, they may receive less support. On their lost loved one’s birthday, near the holidays, or around the anniversary of their passing, check in on them and visit to show that you care.
