Getting your dog groomed is a must if they enjoy particularly messy forms of play. Taking baths, however, may not be your dog’s favorite activity. They may need some extra help feeling at ease with groomers and with bathing. To relieve bath time stress for both you and your dog, follow these five practical pet care tricks.

5 Tips for Helping Your Dog Enjoy Bath Time

1. Go for a Walk

2. Check the Water

Bath water shouldn’t be too hot or too cold for your dog’s comfort. Aim for lukewarm water, which won’t burn their skin or make them shiver. Instead of directing a stream of water straight at them, use a cup to gently pour water over their head and body, or use a handheld showering device and control the strength of the spray. The first order of pet care is being respectful of your pet’s comfort and safety.

3. Put a Towel Down

Dogs become frightened when they aren’t able to gain stable footing on a slippery floor. Use a bath mat or a towel to keep their paws from sliding out from under them. Their nerves will keep in check, and you can guide them into different positions without a fear of falling.

4. Move Outside

The confining space of a shower or tub may not be your dog’s favorite place to be. Keeping them from feeling trapped will ease tensions. Consider taking the bath outside where you can securely tether them and use a garden hose as a water source.

5. Use Treats

Any pet care authority will tell you that food is an incredible incentive for dogs. Use treats strategically to keep them happy and for following your commands. Also, try timing meals around baths. If your dog learns to associate bath time with dinner, you’ll have more bathing success.
