Like antique wooden furniture and fine art, electronics require extra preparation before they’re placed in storage. Without proper care, their interiors become vulnerable to different types of damage, such as condensation and rust. Before putting your valuable electronic items into storage, use these four tips to make sure you’re taking the proper precautions.

Getting Your Electronics Ready for Storage

1. Clean & Detach

Clean your electronics with microfiber cloths to eliminate dust, cobwebs, and other debris prior to storage. Refer to the owner’s manuals for recommendations regarding wires you should unplug and pieces you should take apart, such as inkjet cartridges that will dry up or possibly melt. Label all separate pieces and wire bundles, and place them in small plastic containers with snap-on lids. If necessary, take photos of the electronics and place them in the containers to avoid confusion during the reassembly process.

2. Use Original Packaging Whenever Possible

storageStore electronics in their original packaging whenever possible. This packaging typically includes foam inserts and other features that protect and preserve devices such as laptops, televisions, and gaming consoles. If you don’t have the original boxes, purchase anti-static foam to protect computer and television screens.

3. Incorporate Packing Paper & Old Towels

If major electronics are missing their original packaging, keep them extra safe with old towels and packing paper. Towels and other old fabrics free of screen-scratching embellishments offer quality cushioning. Packing paper also provides extra protection and functions as a box or container liner. However, never use plastic to wrap electronics, since this material traps moisture.

4. Consider Climate Control

Select a climate-controlled storage unit that maintains an internal temperature around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Climate-controlled units reduce or eliminate humidity, and they’re also free of insects and vermin. Add silica packets to boxes and containers to wick moisture, and place charcoal dehumidifiers in the unit for further temperature control.
